Before the day your new roof is to be repaired or installed, there are a few things you should do to prepare for when the roofing company comes. As Burlington roofers, we would like to explain how to make your roofer’s job easier and everything needed to be done to make the work go as smoothly as possible.
You want to make sure your property is cleared from anything that could hinder their work. During the day, most roofing companies will be carrying and using a lot of equipment, supplies and tools and don’t want to have to dodge objects on your lawn.
Some children’s toys can be quite dangerous to work around so many sure they’re all gathered up and put away out of site. This way the workers can have a clear path while working and walking around the job site.
Grab the hose, the wheel barrel, any gardening tools or any other type of equipment or tools that could get in the way of the roofers or get damaged. If you don’t have anywhere to store certain tools etc., just put everything in a pile as far away from the house and the work site as possible.
It’s best to keep all your pets in your house and also gather and remove any pet toys or supplies from your backyard too. If your pets are outside, they’ll probably be stressed out at all the people walking around and making noise. It’s important that the workers have unhindered access to all the areas of the backyard, and that your pets are not getting hurt by any of the supplies or roofing equipment.
Also, the job may take a few days so if this is the case, take your dog for a walk rather than letting them out in the backyard. With all the equipment and supplies laying round, they could very easily get hurt or accidentally damage something. If pets are an issue ask one of your family members if they can take them for a few days.
Although most professional roofing companies are tidy and organized, it’s a good idea to park your car on the street instead of leaving it in the driveway. Doing so will also give the workers enough space to park their vehicles and it will ensure your car won’t get accidentally scratched or damaged.
Although your roofers will probably request that you move your car from the driveway, it’s a courteous to have your driveway cleared before they arrive so they can start the work right away.
When certain roofing jobs are being done, dust and debris can make its way into your attic. These days most homes don’t have storage access in the attic but if you’re one of the lucky ones that do, find out from your roofers whether you need to move your storage belongings elsewhere in your home.
Depending on the area of the roof they’re working on, you may not need to actually remove your belongings but you want to make sure before the job starts.
If you need to remove items you can buy large storage containers at Home Depot to put your belongings in while the roofing or attic work is being done.
Even if you don’t always talk to your neighbours it’s a great idea to visit them and inform them of the upcoming roofing work. Depending on the nature of the work that’s done, there could be hammering and other loud noises throughout the day. If you inform your neighbours, they’ll think it’s considerate and it could help them plan a day outing in advance of roofing day.
If you have children, let their friend’s parents know that work is being done to your roof so they can advise their children to be careful if they come over. For younger children it might be smart to have them meet away from the property because sometimes children forget and could end up playing around the job site.

Your point about informing your neighbours first before doing a roofing project indeed makes a lot of sense. You wouldn’t want to disturb them too much out of nowhere, so you should definitely show them some respect and inform them at least a few days before the project starts so they know what’s going on. I’ll make sure I remember this before I look for any roofers in the area so I won’t be a bother to them.
