Roof & Attic Insulation Differences

Attic Insulation

Attic insulation is only used to insulate the space between the ceiling and the roof. Its the common insulation we think of when we hear the words ‘attic insulation.’ or ‘insulation top-up’.

Its main function

Its main function is to help keep the warm air inside the house below, regulate the help temperature and reduce energy consumption. The type of insulation applied to your attic will depend on things like the climate you live in, the size of your attic and the type of roof you have. Fibreglass batts, blown-in cellulose, and spray foam insulation are all popular options for attic insulation and is used by roofers throughout Ontario.

Helps Ventilation

Proper attic ventilation is also important to consider because it helps remove excess moisture and heat from the attic which prevents mold and mildew buildups. Proper ventilation also prolongs the life of the roof while insufficient ventilation leads to reduced effectiveness of insulation and inevitable damage to the roof structure over a prolonger period of time.

Energy savings

Attic insulation installAlso, proper insulation and ventilation in the attic help reduce the load on the home’s energy systems and has the potential to increase energy savings. When your attic is inspected, your roofers will pay attention to the insulation level of your attic-floor and the walls.

If your attic floor is not insulated properly because of wear-and-tear or damage, heat from your home will escape into the outside and needs to be topped-up. The insulation is designed to keep the attic insulated and ventilated for optimal energy efficiency and comfort.

Roof Insulation

Roof insulation on the other hand, is used to insulate the actual roof structure. It’s typically installed between the rafters or trusses of the roof and can be made of various materials such as fibreglass, cellulose, or foam.

The type and thicknesses of the roof insulation required for a roof depends on the local climate, the size of your roof and your energy efficiency goals. Your roofer will discuss these options with you but note that both types of insulation are critical for maintaining a comfortable home and reducing energy consumption. They serve different purposes.

Material Comparisons

Installing insulation between batsThe main difference between insulation used for attics and insulation used for roofs is where they’re installed. Attic insulation is basically installed between the room ceilings and the roof of a home. You can see it on your the floor or supporting boards of your attic when you go up there.

Main differences

Attic insulation and roof insulation are and act different. Roof insulation is installed within the actual structure of the roof. Attic insulation goes in the floor of the attic to keep the rooms below warm and cool (during the summer and winter respectively), while roof insulation goes on top of the roof deck and keeps the attic cool while preventing excess heat loss.

The materials used are basically the same like fibreglass, cellulose, or foam but the thickness and how efficiently it stops heat from going through—called R-value—may be different. Roof insulation usually needs to be thicker and have a higher R-value.

The right insulation material depends on things like the cost of supplies and the specific needs of the homeowner and the space in question.

The Take Home

Now you’re more informed about the difference between the two insulation applications, as a home owner you really don’t need to worry about it. Once you speak to your local roofing company, they’ll do an inspection of your attic and insulation and advise you on the best solution for your needs.
